Right around the corner from Carini Lang, Damon Brandt has been refining his beautiful home for decades what was once a cheese factory. Sharing this Duane Street apartment with his wife and children, Brandt has made his career in the city as a curator and film maker. Damon is a collector in the truest sense. African indigo textiles, sculptures, and objects that line the walls and shelves.
Brandt has also been a long time practitioner of Zen living. His flute playing can be heard moving through the house and out his large windows onto Duane street. His apartment has also served as the setting for sound baths and meditation ceremonies.
It was Brandt’s good eye and Zen appreciation that drew him to Joseph Carini’s indigo creations. Damon owns two beautiful indigo rugs, each unique. Their abrash, the natural variation in tones that comes from Carini Lang’s special dye process, gives each an individual personality. For Brandt, they carry the quality of water: fluid, calming, and quietly transformative, brought into space not merely as objects but as a presence.
