Альбом экспедиции Седова на Северный полюс
в 1912 - 1914 годах
Album of the Sedov expedition to the North Pole
1912 - 1914
Music:
Andante & Variation in B major by Anton Arensky
Senior lieutenant Georgy Yakovlevich Sedov (1877-1914), a hydrograph and geodesist, devoted a considerable part of his activity to the exploration of the Northern Sea Route, which was to the north of Siberia. Son of a poor fisherman, Sedov achieved the rank of an officer of the Russian Imperial Navy, which was unprecedented for a man of such humble origins.
In August 1912 the expedition members left Arkhangelsk on the sailing ship "Holy Martyr Phocas" with the intention to reach Franz Josef Land, then to reach the North Pole with dog sleds. The expedition relied on private funds, which led to its failure due to lack of food and fuel. Sedov, already sick at the beginning of the movement on a sleigh to the pole in early 1914, died before reaching his goal. Nevertheless, the expedition participants were able to conduct significant geodetic work and scientific research during the wintering period on Novaya Zemlya in 1912-1913 and made a great contribution to the knowledge of the geography of the North.
Many photographs of the collection were made by the artist and photographer of the expedition Nikolai Vasilyevich Pinegin (1883-1940). Some of them are attributed to the geologist of the expedition Pavlov, who during his time has conducted a large number of scientific studies in Siberia and the Far East. The photographs show the seeing off of the expedition from Arkhangelsk, the expedition members on the ship "Holy Martyr Phocas ", severe winter conditions of the expedition, and Arctic scenes.
