Nokia isn't dead. It's even making more money than when it was selling a phone every 3 seconds.
In 2007, Nokia dominated the global mobile market with the best-selling phone of all time, the Nokia 1100. Six years later, the iPhone, Symbian, Stephen Elop's "burning platform" memo, and the failed merger with Microsoft had wiped out the Finnish empire: a 93% drop in its stock market value and a lost decade for all of Finland.
Except that Microsoft only bought the phones. The rest is still going strong: €19 billion in revenue, one of only three global telecom equipment manufacturers along with Ericsson and Huawei, and 20,000 patent families. Standard Essential Patents that are impossible to circumvent: €1.4 billion per year, an 85% profit margin. Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi—they all pay. The brand killed by the iPhone receives a royalty on every iPhone sold.
