"Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves" (Matthew
10:16. Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
The meaning of this phrase becomes especially clear when we consider that in the biblical tradition, the serpent is a symbol of wisdom, and the dove of purity and innocence. A corresponding edification follows from this. Hegumen Nikon (Vorobyov) wrote: "...all people are fallen creatures. This fall cannot but affect their relationships with others. This is why, among other things, the Lord said to the disciples: Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye wise (Matthew 10:16), but behold, I am with you always (Matthew 28:20)." On the one hand, one's own wisdom and prudence are needed, but most importantly, constant appeal for help to the Lord, invisible to fleshly man but visible in spirit, who promised all who trust in Him that not a hair of their head would fall without His will (Luke 21:18). Trusting in Him, the apostles endured everything, yet conquered the world—a small number of sheep defeated countless flocks of wolves. Isn't this proof of God's power and providence? Yet the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:10). "In all sorrows and difficulties, turn to the Lord, and He will nourish you (Psalm 54:23)" (Repentance is Left to Us. Part 2. Letter 233).
