Much has been said about Dark Souls, but I have always been struck by how well it rhymes with mystical literature, specifically with "The Darkest Night of the Soul" by Saint John of the Cross... The mystic advocates detachment from earthly pleasures as a path to union with the divine. In Dark Souls, players must renounce comforts and face constant loss, as every death in the game implies the loss of souls and progress. This dynamic reflects the idea that only by renouncing material things can one advance on the spiritual journey.
Renunciation and Detachment. Symbolism. Asceticism. The Purification of the Soul.
Both contexts explore the idea that suffering and trials are paths to transformation. Suffering is presented as a means for purification and growth.
