All the members of our choir came to our church a few years ago.
Some of them have been singing with us for a year, others two or three.When I first met them these guys didn't know even the simplest things about the music of the Russian Orthodox Church.
They'd never sung in church before. For the last two or three years we have been rehearsing at least once a week.
They learned quickly and now they can sing troparia and stichira in different tones without
music. They can fluently sing the vespers service and the liturgy and have finally learned the service order.
Of course we're always improving, but I think they have learned the basic parts of the service very well.
Based on our experience we can say that if you'd like to sing Russian church music, don't be afraid to start learning it.
It takes about a year to learn all the basics, If you have weekly one - hour rehearsals, constantly attending vespers and liturgy on the weekends.
It's not hard at all when you doing what you enjoy!
