Major farm life level unlocked! I bought an American Devon Jersey cross Milk Cow! This heifer is due to calf VERY soon, just in time to train her at the milking stanchion and get her ready to join our dairy herdshare! Reba MilkEntire is a very special cow, raised by a horse farmer, she is halter trained, soft as a ball of cotton, and a gentle beast. She's 1000 pounds of awesome, and I feel so lucky to have such an incredible animal to learn the ins and outs of dairy farming with. Milking a cow is no picnic, it's gotta be done twice a day at exactly the same time and is about an hour each time of pretty strenuous labor. The relationship with the animal, and of course the milk, though, are worth every bit of it. The cream, cheese, yogurt, butter and all the other goods coming our farm's way make me very excited indeed!!! Even though I've been raising dairy goats for years, having our own milk cow was a lifelong dream and an important piece in increasing the sustainability of our organic farm. Rotational grazing improves the land incrementally each season, manure goes into organic compost which feeds the garden, the proceeds from the milk support growing the farm and infrastructure, extra milk goes to the bottle baby sheep, and spoiled milk supplements the feed of other animals on the farm like pigs and chickens.
