The basic "problem" in 1999 was that for various historical reasons, programmers had generally stored years like "1999" as "99". The "crisis" would result because the flip to "2000" would be to "00" which is technically before "99" causing a range of potential issues. According to the video, no matter how much we were to prepare, it was not enough, it was going to be bad. We were doomed, DOOMED, so prepare for the end of society. As we all know, the problems were not "insurmountable" and even though they were not fixed 100%, nearly all of them were just annoyances like bad dates on web sites. The big lesson here is that people generally work together. A crisis does not mean that everything descends into chaos. If everyone faces a crisis, the tendency is to pull together, not every man for himself, as that simply won't work for anyone, and most people know it.
