Here is an update on mainnet migration and account verification
Historically, Pi accounts relied on phone numbers, not emails, to provide a unique identifier. While this method was initially effective, it encountered several challenges as SMS (text message via phone number) verification proved to be unstable and expensive. Due to the global nature of the Pi community, varying telecommunications laws, mobile carrier policies, user service subscriptions, and cost constraints, SMS communication has not always proven effective.
Given these challenges, and as the network is now in the process of implementing more robust verification methods such as KYC and liveness checks, it is time to move away from relying primarily on phone numbers to email-based two-factor authentication (2FA). The ultimate goal is to support advanced authentication methods like passkeys and biometrics in the future. Email-based 2FA verification will not only solve these problems but also improve security because it consists of two steps.
To complete this process, each user must first add a trusted email to their account. However, some users never added an email, or entered an incorrect email, or lost access to their old emails, or shared emails with family members’ Pi accounts.
Since adding an email was not mandatory when creating an account, and this is a major security change, additional analysis and testing was required before Pi allowed the migration. This included verifying how users added their emails, how they verified them, how they completed 2FA, etc., to ensure the security and accuracy of all these steps. In some cases, additional steps such as liveness checks or additional SMS verification were also required. This is why the migration was temporarily paused.
The good news is that the migration process has resumed and as more email-based 2FA and system-level checks are completed, this phase will open up to more users. Pi Network is committed to a smooth and secure transition, and your patience is appreciated as we continue to improve the security of all users' accounts.
