AD-46: DEMENTYEV'S EXPERIMENTAL ASSAULT RIFLE
Ruslan Chumak, Head of the Collections Department at the Military History Museum of Artillery, Engineering Troops, and Signal Corps, discusses the technical features of the experimental assault rifle from Kovrov, which participated in competitive trials in late 1947 and early 1948 to select the assault rifle for the Soviet Army.
The AD-46 is a 7.62mm assault rifle designed by Alexander Andreevich with a classic layout: a gas-operated motor above the barrel, a hammer-type trigger mechanism, and locking by rotating the bolt onto two lugs. The rifle has a 30-round magazine and a folding metal buttstock.
One of the technical features of the rifle that distinguishes it from other competitors is its disassembly method: removal of the moving mechanism is accomplished by disconnecting the base of the trigger mechanism and the receiver backplate, along with the buttstock and pistol grip.
During testing, this rifle performed worse than all its competitors. In addition to the delays, the assault rifle suffered significant lug movement and several malfunctions.
