The Global Positioning System (GPS) was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1970s for military purposes. It was designed to provide precise navigation and timing information to improve military operations, such as targeting and positioning.

The Korean Air Lines Incident (1983): In 1983, a turning point came when a Korean Air Lines flight (KAL 007) accidentally strayed into Soviet airspace and was shot down, resulting in the loss of 269 lives. This tragic incident highlighted the need for accurate global navigation for civilian aircraft.

In response to the KAL incident, U.S. President Ronald Reagan announced that the GPS system would be made freely available to the world for civilian use, once it was fully operational. The goal was to enhance the safety of air travel and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
