What makes an interior feel good—not just look good?

In this video, I use something as simple as selecting a pillow for a chair to explain some of the fundamental Elements and Principles of interior design and how they work together to influence the feeling of a space.

Rather than simply showing you which pillow to choose, I want to show you how to think like a designer—and how you can use design principles to make more intentional choices in your own home.

Using the pillow as a real-life example, I'll walk you through design elements and principles including:

Proportion — how the size of an object relates to the furniture and space around it
Color & Contrast — how colors interact and why a space doesn't have to be perfectly “matchy-matchy” to feel cohesive
Texture — how mixing textures can add depth, interest, and dimension
Shape — how contrasting shapes can soften, balance, or create visual interest in a room
Function — why beautiful design still needs to work for the way you actually live
Emotion & Meaning — how the materials, colors, textures, and objects we choose can connect us to memories, feelings, and experiences

Because interior design isn't just about making a room look beautiful.

It's about understanding why certain choices work together—and then using that understanding to create a space that feels good to live in.

A fabric might remind you of the ocean.
A texture might make you feel calm.
A color might bring back a favorite memory.
An object might remind you of someone you love.

These seemingly small choices can create a much deeper emotional connection between you and your home.

And that's what makes interior design so interesting to me: the aesthetics and the emotion don't have to be separate.

You can learn the traditional principles of interior design—color, proportion, scale, balance, contrast, texture, shape, composition—and also learn to pay attention to your own intuition and emotional response to a space.

The pillow in this video is just one small example of that larger process.

✨ This is also the approach I teach through Intuition & Interiors: learning the principles of interior design while developing your own creative voice, intuition, and ability to make design decisions that genuinely feel like you.
