Lesson - 26: What is a Router?
In this video, we will be discussing routers, their uses and some important points related to this device.
Routers are physical or virtual devices used for receiving, analyzing, and forwarding data packets over the internet. An IP packet's destination address is examined by a router, which then uses headers and routing tables to determine the best method to transfer the packets. Routers are based on the IP address of computers and work on layer three of the OSI model. It communicates between networks using protocols like ICMP. It also passes network packets from source to destination automatically by calculating the optimal routing path.
Router divides Broadcast Domain as well as Collision Domain and it also has per port Broadcast Domain and Collision Domain.
Here are some important points about routers:
Routers are used in LANs and WANs.
Compared to switches and hubs, it is more expensive.
Using a routing protocol allows the data to be sent across a network.
It shares information with other routers in the network.
Routers have the capability of analyzing and modifying data during transmission.
Routers are more capable than other types of network devices, such as hubs and switches.
