If life arose independently on Mars — our nearest neighbor — then life is common across the galaxy. And if life is common, the Milky Way should be teeming with civilizations. But the sky is completely silent. No signals. No megastructures. No evidence of anyone, anywhere, across 13.8 billion years of cosmic history.
Something is killing them all. Reliably. Universally.
That something is called the Great Filter — and finding life on Mars would tell us it almost certainly lies ahead of us.
This is the Fermi Paradox. And it might be the most important idea you have never fully sat with.
