Megaloblastic anemia is a type of anemia characterized by the presence of unusually large, immature and dysfunctional red blood cells called megaloblasts in the bone marrow. Megaloblastic anemia is primarily caused by impaired DNA synthesis due to deficiencies in vitamin B12 or folate (vitamin B9). The decreased levels of these vitamins hinder the normal production and maturation of red blood cells, leading to their abnormal enlargement and inefficient oxygen-carrying capacity.
