PCV ll Packed Cell Volume ll Haematocrit ll
Packed cell volume is also known as haematocrit. Packed cell volume is the volume of packed red cells out of the whole blood. PCV is expressed as percentage of total blood volume. It is a simple test to identify conditions like anaemia or polycythemia and responses to treatment.
Packed cell volume depends on the size and number of the red blood cells. If the size and the number of red blood decreases then PCV value decreases and vice versa.
In iron deficiency anaemia, the size of the RBC decreases and that results in low PCV in iron deficiency anaemia. But exactly opposite happens in megaloblastic anaemia, where the size of RBC increases that results in high PCV.
There are two methods to determine PCV.
1. Macrohaematocrit method: where we need to use Wintrobe tube with EDTA anticoagulated blood.
2. Microhaematocrit Method: Where we can to use plain capillary tube with EDTA venous blood or heparanized capillary tube with capillary blood.
Normal Range:
Male: 42 - 52%
Female: 37 - 47%
