Building a picture/poster frame from dimensional maple as a Christmas gift for my fiancée.
Overview
Starting from dimensional maple
Cutting the rebate
Trimming the sides
Cutting the joints
Glueing up
Trimming the faces
Top 5 Lessons Learned
1. Stanley No. 78 rebate plane is difficult to use
Initialization was easy, but using it was hard
Blade didn’t adjust well, getting your first cut was a nightmare
Still willing to admit operator error but time will tell
2. Ensure your blade is sticking out about 1/64-1/32 from the flush edge of your plane
3. Ensure your frame is square by measuring the diagonals
Trick I learned in Mexico building houses
4. Gaps will be present, use sawdust & glue to fill them
Use finer sawdust than I did, probably just sand it first and use that sawdust
A second video focusing on the finish of the picture frame will be posted shortly.
I hope everyone was able to enjoy their Thanksgiving with family and friends,
Happy Thanksgiving,
Josh
