The emergence of plate tectonic theory

Plate tectonics is a relatively new theory—in fact, according to National Geographic, it hadn’t become popular until the 1960s. However, the concept of continental movement was brewing long before it became widely accepted.

In 1912, German scientist Alfred Wegener proposed a theory he called continental drift. According to Wegener’s theory, Earth’s continents once formed a single, giant landmass, which he called Pangaea.

Over millions of years, Pangaea slowly broke apart, eventually forming the continents as they are today. Wegener believed this continental drift explained why the borders of South America and Africa looked like matching puzzle pieces. He also pointed to similar rock formations and fossils on these two continents as proof to back his theory.

What are plate tectonics?
Tectonic plates, large slabs of rock that divide Earth's crust, move constantly to reshape the Earth's landscape. The system of ideas behind plate tectonics theory suggests that Earth's outer shell (lithosphere) is divided into several plates that glide over the Earth's rocky inner layer above the soft core (mantle).

What causes plate tectonics?
Magma is the molten rock below the crust, in the mantle. Tremendous heat and pressure within the earth cause the hot magma to flow in convection currents. These currents cause the movement of the tectonic plates that make up the earth's crust.

Can we see tectonic plates?
Iceland sits on the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. It is the only place in the world where you can see those two tectonic plates and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge above ground. That is pretty neat, in our opinion.

What is the smallest plate?
The Juan de Fuca Plate is the smallest of earth's tectonic plates. It is approximately 250,000 square kilometers. It is located west of Washington State and British Columbia, under the Pacific Ocean.

How big is a tectonic plate?
Plates are on average 125km thick, reaching maximum thickness below mountain ranges. Oceanic plates (50-100km) are thinner than the continental plates (up to 200km) and even thinner at the ocean ridges where the temperatures are higher.

Do plate tectonics affect humans?

Tectonic processes cause the movement of land and earthquakes. This heat drives plate tectonics and parts of the rock cycle. Where humans can live can be affected by volcanic events, sea level rise, and earthquakes, all of which are related to tectonic processes.
