If you are wondering why your plasma cutter is not cutting through thicker metals such as rods, well, I should say maybe there’s no actual problem with your machine. Because all you need to learn is some plasma cutting tips and tricks which I am sharing with you in this video. Some of my subscribers also say that their plasma cutter has no power because it's only a 30 or 50 amp machine which they think is not enough power and this will result in the plasma cutter not cutting.

Well, if you ask me, even if your plasma cutter is not high amp, you still need high pressure air (psi) with your air compressor and then switch to the maximum amps your machine has and that should work to cut most thinner metals. For example, my unit has a maximum of 50 amps. But if I have to cut a thick metal rod I would maximize the amps and then put my air pressure to 100 psi.

However, the solution of plasma cutter not cutting through does not end there because you still have to consider some plasma cutting tips and tricks that will enable your torch to produce and create a super hot arc. For one, your earth clamp should be clamped very near your workpiece or there will be a lack of electrical ground to rev up the cycle of electricity. Usually, if your plasma cutter has no power, the ground clamp is placed far from your workpiece.

Check also your torch consumables. The consumables that are loaded in your plasma torch are the electrode, swirl ring, cutting tip, and ceramic cap. If any of these would have a problem like cracks, loose capping or you’re using old consumables, the case of a plasma cutter not cutting would likely happen.

If all of the above are correct but still the plasma cutter is not cutting through, I have another trick up my sleeve for that and the secret is how to properly angle your plasma cutter torch.

If you watch the video, you will see that when I cut a rod that is about 3/8 of an inch, I cut it pretty fast. But when I cut an old chisel that is over an inch, I need to angle up my torch so that I can melt away the metal at an angle in a small portion.

I did this because if I cut thick metal and I would position my torch at a straight angle, the hot plasma will blow back to the consumables and the melted metal will not be blown right away making the cutting time longer and can also damage the consumables.

So my plasma cutting tips and tricks in this video not only involved setting the right psi, putting your machine to maximum amps and installing the right consumables but also how to use your torch by applying the right angle when cutting thick metals like rods.
