Piano Roll practice made in FL Studio 2021.
Original song: Alan Walker - Shattered
Piano version: me and my ear
Note:
In early December 2025, I decided to take a deep breath and start making piano rolls without watching any YouTube videos of existing piano covers. Just me, my ears, my effort, my sweat, and my sleep. After making quite a few piano rolls following videos, it was finally time to do everything on my own. I already had enough experience to place notes, adjust velocities, and manage note lengths.
On December 1st, I started a project called 31 Days FL Keys on Facebook. The goal was to turn songs I love into piano versions, note by note in FL Keys (FL Studio 2021), without any tutorials or YouTube references.
In 31 days, I only managed to finish 2 songs 😔: Alan Walker – Shattered and Linkin Park – Castle of Glass. I didn’t finish Linkin Park, and it looked terrible, so I’m only keeping Shattered.
When I started Shattered, I didn’t even know where to place the first note. Around the 5th note, I realized where it should go. Well, it’s not exact, I didn’t really know which note the melody should start on, so I tested, placed notes on different lines, and listened until it sounded right.
The main melody wasn’t too hard since I was used to hearing notes from previous piano rolls, but the secondary melody was extremely difficult. When I listened to the original song, I could hear it clearly, but when I tried to put it into the piano roll, it sounded like I couldn’t hear it properly. After repeating it over and over and raging at my PC, I finally finished the secondary melody. I almost gave up, but I kept going.
Then I tried adding chords like the pros. I don’t really know how to place chords yet, but I put notes above and below the secondary melody and made sure they blended well. I adjusted the velocities afterward and finished.
This song is my first piano roll, my first work by ear, my first musical instinct dissecting an original song.
It’s my proudest achievement so far. I’m so, so, so happy I did it ❤️
And all of this, without AI, just me and my ears.
