On February 11, 2024 — Super Bowl Sunday — a routine trespassing call in Las Cruces, New Mexico turned into a tragedy that would shake an entire community.
35-year-old Jonah Hernandez had served with the Las Cruces Police Department for just two years. A native of El Paso, he was a devoted husband and father of two young sons. That evening, he responded to what seemed like a minor complaint — a trespasser reported at a vacant property on South Valley Drive.
Within moments of arriving on scene, Officer Hernandez was attacked.
Police later identified the suspect as Armando Silva, a 29-year-old transient man. According to authorities, the encounter escalated instantly. A nearby civilian intervened during the chaos, stopping the attacker, but despite rapid emergency response and transport to MountainView Regional Medical Center, Officer Hernandez did not survive his injuries.
