iPhone X Impressions After A Month
The iPhone X has been out for a month now. Okay. It hasn’t actually been a month but 28 days. Close enough. And, people love it, or just plain hate it. Transitioning to it has been a learning curve. But after a month? How is it? Would it still be worth buying? Is it the best iPhone yet? That’s what we’ll be finding out today.
Out of the box you get well, the iphone, what’d you expect? Then those unnecessary documentation that we just end up throwing away. The iphone itself is built really well, with a glass black and a shiny metal trim. A big departure from the iphone 6 and 7 and more towards the OG iphone and iphone 4’s design language. Because innovation is appealing to your nostalgia.
Kidding aside, it feels nice in the hand but also a bit more slippery than more recent models. And the cameras are mounted differently from Apple’s other dual camera setups. The cameras are actually aligned vertically. And DAT BEZEL. It’s tiny now, allowing them to fit a bigger screen into a much more smaller body.
So let’s get past the elephant in the room, the unibrow. People either don’t care about it, or flat out hate it, and to be honest. It’s well… It doesn’t affect me. No seriously, my favorite NBA player is Anthony davis, so clearly unibrows aren’t a factor for me. it was slightly annoying at first but you tend to forget about it due to how it blends in with the screen because, well, some apps aren’t optimized for it and just display a black bar making it basically an iphone 8. Apple quality. For apps that do utilize the Unibrow thing. It makes great use of the extra screen real estate. The biggest issue with the unibrow is the fact that anything other than the default icons don’t get displayed. That means if you have the phone on “screen rotation lock” or the “do not disturb mode” you wouldn’t be able to tell, unless you pull down the control center. Hopefully this is eventually updated to where it’s viewable. I can’t tell you how many times I missed a call because I forgot to turn off do not disturb mode and didn’t realize it. Gesture controls take a bit to get used to since there’s no longer a home button. But your opinion on the unibrow may differ.
The camera got better and now has a lot of new features like portrait mode for the front camera, and new depth features for the back camera. And that’s it for cameras… Okay fine there’s also Animojis that I will admit I enjoy using. Yeah… Love it or hate it, these are going to get sent to you a lot. Face ID works in most situations, unless you just got out of bed with sleepy eyes. It never works for me when I squint. But in every other situation it works well. It isn’t as fast as touch id though. The video features got a lot better too. It now can shoot 4K at 60 Frames and 1080p at 240 frames.
Then there’s the new OLED display, it’s vibrant and looks more vivid than the previous iphones. If you use black wallpaper, it turns off the lighting behind the black pixels, saving you some battery. The screen size is 5.8 inches diagonally but is actually a little smaller than the iphone 8+ display due to well. Pythagorean theorem and unibrows. There’s an issue with OLED displays on smartphones and that’s screen burn it. And It’s already happened to many iphone X display models I found in my local best buy and target. It’s because their screen is always on for display models that this issue happens. It’s even apparent on Samsung galaxy models. That’s just life for oled screens.
Battery life is pretty good. A whole day of usage for me leaves the phone at around 35% which is great. Of course, I’m using a pretty dark wallpaper to get some extra juice out of the thing, and it seems to be working.
Overall, what I can say about this device is that they pretty much improved every aspect of last year’s model and made it better… at the expense of the fingerprint sensor. Apple put a better and bigger screen in a smaller body, finally changed the design after 3 years, and was mostly successful with this phone. Is it worth the $1,000 price tag? If you’re going from a 2 to 3 year-old phone to this? Yes. If you’re still sitting with a iphone 7, wait another year when Apple fixes the kinks that this model still has and the price of the newer model drops a bit.
