⚜️LYRICS IN ENGLISH :
Tender and beautiful fronds
of my beloved plane tree,
let Fate smile upon you.
May thunder, lightning, and storms
never disturb your dear peace,
nor may you by blowing winds be profaned.
Never was a shade
of any plant
dearer and more lovely,
or more sweet.
⚜️Story of This aria :
"Ombra mai fu," also known as "Largo," is a celebrated aria from George Frideric Handel's opera Xerxes (originally *Serse*), composed in 1738. It is one of the most famous pieces in the operatic repertoire.
The aria is sung by the character Xerxes, the Persian king, who expresses his deep admiration for a great plane tree. The phrase "Ombra mai fu" translates to "Never was a shade," and the piece is a poignant tribute to the beauty and comfort of nature.
Musically, the aria is characterized by its serene and lyrical quality. The rich, flowing lines convey a sense of calm and tranquility, reflecting Xerxes’s reverence for the tree's shade. The orchestration often features lush strings, enhancing the emotional depth of the piece. The melody is notable for its long, sweeping phrases, allowing the singer to showcase their vocal expressiveness and technical skill.
The text and music together create a moment of introspective beauty, making "Ombra mai fu" not only a highlight of *Xerxes*, but also a favorite among audiences and performers alike. Its simplicity and depth continue to resonate, making it a timeless gem in the world of opera.
