🐍 WHAT'S INSIDE A SNAKE'S TAIL 😱
At the end of a rattlesnake's tail is a unique structure called a rattle, unique among animals. Contrary to popular myth, it contains no balls, stones, or filling—it's completely hollow. It consists of numerous rigid keratin segments, the same protein that makes up human nails and hair. Each new segment forms after the snake molts and remains permanently attached to the tail, gradually increasing the size of the rattle. These segments are not rigidly connected to each other but rather touch each other, so when the tail vibrates rapidly, they strike each other, creating a characteristic loud cracking sound. The snake can vibrate its tail up to tens of times per second, making the sound audible over long distances and serving as a warning signal to potential predators and larger animals, allowing it to avoid direct contact and thereby reduce the risk of attack.
