In this video I have given some important key points to identify the cause of upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Gastrointestinal (GIT) tract comprises of esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum and anus. Symptoms of GI bleeding depends on whether it is from the upper or lower portion of gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, anemia or pallor, hematochezia, melena or black colored stool, diarrhea, fatigue, shortness of breath, or hematemesis. Peptic ulcer is the most common cause of hematemesis in children older than 1 year. Hematochezia may be due to infections across the different age groups. Standard imaging studies for gastric conditions include upper gastrointestinal series, ultrasound, MRI, abdominal X-Ray with barium swallow or barium enema.
