Title: CubicSpace: A reliable model for proportional, comfortable and universal capture and display of stereoscopic content (SD&A-154)

Abstract: Stereoscopic content creation has traditionally been an empirical process based on rules of thumb forged through decades of trial and errors. Content thus created is always optimized for specific viewing conditions (venues, type of users, etc.) and provides a lesser experience in terms of accurate depth perception and viewing comfort when used in other viewing conditions. Today, after 180 years of 3D, stereoscopic content creation remains a craft that cannot be industrialized and democratized. The CubicSpace project aimed at developing a universal mathematical model which would allow simple creation of 3D content and its automatic adaptation for any stereoscopic display and any viewing condition. The model had to consider geometrical aspects as well as physiological factors which affect the perception of depth and the viewing comfort of users. It was demonstrated that stereoscopic content can be captured once and readapted for comfortable viewing on any stereoscopic display. Based on the same model, it has been demonstrated that panning and zooming in 3D can be achieved while maintaining viewing comfort. It has also been shown that stereoscopic panoramic (VR) content can be adapted as well for stereoscopic viewing on regular 3D displays.
Biography: Nicholas Routhier is the founder of Mindtrick Innovations Inc., a Montreal based company focused on strategic advising and technology development. As a tech entrepreneur, Nicholas develops next generation 3D image capturing and processing technologies for extended reality (VR, AR, MR) as well as glass-free 3D displays. Nicholas has spent the last 20 years working in the information technology and multimedia sectors. He is recognized for his strategic vision, his analytical skills and his leadership which have helped him navigate and position his ventures in new emerging industries. In 1998, driven by his passion for 3D, Nicholas co-founded “SENSIO Technologies”, a company specialized in 3D stereoscopic image processing technologies. He led the company as its President and CEO from its early days as a tech startup to a publicly traded company listed on the TSX-Venture working with world-class partners and customers. Mr. Routhier is also a seasoned technologist with 15 patents granted for innovations which have generated millions of dollars in revenues through the years. He namely developed the award-winning SENSIO Hi-Fi 3D technology, a spatial compression technology which was used in 3DTVS and for the live 3D distribution of events in theaters worldwide including the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. With CubicSpace, M. Routhier aims at democratizing and industrializing the creation, distribution, sharing and displaying of stereoscopic content by providing a reliable, robust and predictable 3D image processing model. CubicSpace is the fruit of 20 years of research efforts to better understand the stereoscopic geometry and the human perception of depth.
