Michael Kramer highlights the near-term levels to watch across major stock indices, FX pairs and commodities ahead of Thursday’s US inflation data. Analysts estimate that US consumer prices grew 2.3% in the year to September, easing from 2.5% in August. However, the swaps market suggests that traders are pricing in the possibility of a 2.4% yearly increase. After a strong US jobs report last week, even a slight upside surprise on US inflation could reduce the likelihood of a second large interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve next month, potentially strengthening the dollar while weighing on US indices. Meanwhile, an announcement from China yesterday disappointed traders as it failed to provide details of how the government plans to use its recently unveiled stimulus package to boost economic growth.
