Learn How Cloudflare Withstood a 3.8 Tbps DDoS Attack

Since the beginning of September, Cloudflare's DDoS protection systems have been facing a massive L3/4 DDoS attack campaign that lasted for a month. During this time, Cloudflare's defenses have mitigated over a hundred L3/4 attacks with extremely high traffic. Many of these attacks reached over 2 billion packets per second (Bpps) with over 2 terabits per second (Tpbs) sent to the server. And the scariest thing is that the largest attack peaked at 3.8 Terabits per second. This number surpasses any other large attack previously disclosed by any organization. Cloudflare's defenses detected and blocked these attacks proactively and automatically, without human intervention. Below are two graphs showing two separate attacks against the same Cloudflare customer. And Cloudflare's systems performed the automatic blocking effectively.
