Touring OBOR MARKET ~ Shopping Like a Local in BUCHAREST, ROMANIA
We love touring local markets wherever we travel. Obor Market in Bucharest, Romania is a must-visit!
Obor Market has been around in some form for hundreds of years and has undergone many changes throughout history. It started as a meeting place where local farmers came to sell their produce. As Bucharest grew it became a huge daily market spanning 16 city blocks. In the 1970s during a communist “urban renewal” campaign, much of the market was torn down and replaced with two halls, a small park, and public housing. Today Obor Market is known as the largest and oldest market in Bucharest and it is thriving yet again.
The market consists of two very large halls and a sprawling outdoor area (weather permitting). In the first hall, you’ll find household goods, fresh meats and fish, and some bakeries. In the second hall, you’ll find even more local and fresh food. Take a walk through the stalls offering seasonal fruits and vegetables, or head upstairs and try free samples of meats, cheeses, and olives.
No tour of Obor Market would be complete without trying a famous local cuisine: mici at the Obor terrace outside. These are said to be some of the best mici in Bucharest!
To get to Obor Market you can take the #21 light rail tram to the Bucur Obor stop
followed by a short walk, or take the metro on the M1 line to Obor station and the market is just a few minutes walk from there.
