Garden Makeover Transformation, July 2021 | Before and After Progress - from Overgrown and Neglected
In honor of six months of sharing Garden Tour 2021 videos, I thought it would be interesting to stop for a minute and enjoy a look at some satisfying garden cleanup and change. Many of the before shots were snapped less than a year ago, so you can really see how much of a metamorphosis has happened around our property. Of course, we have much more to accomplish, but we are seeing improvement all around us as you can see in the before and after garden photos.
How it Started vs. How it's Going.
Learning to design garden beds for beginners. We've added ornamental perennial beds in areas of our front garden over the past seven months. This was very challenging because we started with more or less a blank slate. I'm happy to say that I couldn't be happier with how they've turned out. It really has been a lesson in trial and error (many errors). But little be little, things have come together. The front yard garden beds started to be planted out last December and they have had time to really fill in and shine. Initially, we chose to use annual plants to fill in gaps between perennial plants, but now that those are flourishing it's become more of a challenge to find empty spots to add new plants and annuals. Creating new perennial garden beds from scratch was definitely a learning experience. I've had to move (re-home) and thoughtfully arrange plants to give the garden a balanced design. With patience and some minor adjustments, I've been able to use a balanced combination of plant color, texture, and repetition to achieve the garden aesthetic we were looking for.
Enlarging Our Vegetable Garden. As part of our garden transformation, we've recently completed an expansion of our raised bed vegetable garden. Besides doubling our raised bed square footage, we’ve also added several trellises to increase garden space with vertical growth. As part of the expansion, we also found a way to add a gravel patio with an outdoor dining area.
What's On the Horizon. Moving forward, the next couple of months will be mainly about summer garden maintenance and trying to keep plants happy during extreme heat (we garden in Southern California Zone 10a which means many triple digit temperatures throughout summer months). For one thing, you'll notice shade cloths over our raised beds. Not a very attractive addition to the garden, but a necessary one here. While we're hiding from the heat, we'll also put some time to use planning our fall garden projects, many of which I've discussed during my previous monthly garden tour videos.
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy this month's before and after garden video/slideshow. I try to upload new videos every week (usually over the weekend) to share how our little casita is transforming over time. Please feel free to leave me comments and I hope you'll come back again soon! ~Cindy

ABOUT MY CHANNEL:
My channel is mainly about the DIY transformation of our long neglected suburban 1950s era ranch style home. It has been undergoing a re-design and makeover of the front and back gardens with much of the work being done by yours truly - me! But I can't complain because I really do enjoy the process and I've always loved a good do-it-yourself project (or in this case projects). Also, because my budget is pretty tight, you'll see that besides doing the work myself (with help from my hubby) I often work with sale or clearance plants and items or sometimes things that have been thrifted or re-purposed to help stretch my gardening dollars. We’re located in Sunny Southern California, USDA Hardiness Zone 10a (where it sometimes seems as if we have no change of seasons and it’s just hot all the time!)
