Catherine O’Hara, the Canadian-American, Emmy-winning actress best known for her work in Schitt’s Creek, Home Alone, and Best in Show, has died at the age of 71.

Page Six reports that O’Hara was taken to the hospital by ambulance in the hours before her death and was transported in serious condition. The Los Angeles Fire Department said first responders were called to her home in Brentwood shortly before 5 a.m. on Friday. No cause of death has been disclosed.
O’Hara began her career as a member of Second City, the renowned improvisational comedy troupe that gave rise to SCTV, where she earned her first television roles and quickly established herself as a standout comedic talent.
She was widely beloved for portraying Kate McCallister, the determined mother of Macaulay Culkin’s character in the first two Home Alone films, and for her unforgettable performance as Moira Rose, which spanned 80 episodes of Schitt’s Creek.
Her film credits include acclaimed mockumentaries such as Best in Show (2000) and A Mighty Wind (2003), as well as appearances in both the original Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Catherine’s most recent work came opposite Seth Rogen in the Apple TV+ series The Studio.
She won an Emmy Award in 2020 for her role in Schitt’s Creek, following her first Emmy win in 1982 for her writing contributions to SCTV Network 90. Throughout her celebrated career, she frequently collaborated with comedy legends including John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Eugene Levy.
Born and raised in Toronto, O’Hara was the sixth of seven children. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, on the set of Beetlejuice in 1988. The couple married in 1992 and had two sons, Matthew and Luke.
