Caligula, also known as Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, was a Roman emperor who ruled from AD 37 to 41. He was born in AD 12 to Germanicus, a successful general, and Agrippina the Elder, a granddaughter of Emperor Augustus.
Caligula became emperor after the death of Tiberius, his great-uncle and predecessor. At the beginning of his reign, he was popular and loved by the people of Rome. However, as time went on, he became increasingly erratic and violent, and he is known for his cruel and extravagant behavior.
Among Caligula's most notorious acts were his attempts to appoint his horse as consul, his execution of several members of the Senate, and his incestuous relationship with his sister Drusilla. He also spent vast sums of money on lavish parties, gladiatorial games, and other forms of entertainment.
Caligula's reign came to an end when he was assassinated by members of the Praetorian Guard, who were tired of his tyranny and excesses.
