Famed Photographer Steve Pyke sits down with fellow photog Zack Smith to discuss the finer points of the craft, including why he shoots on a Rolleiflex and the process of taking portraits for his original Philosophers edition.

Pyke has a follow-up collection of Philosophers coming out May 2011 (Oxford University Press), which includes portraits of Judy Thomson, David Chalmers, Richard Rorty and Delia Graff, among others. Through the stark detail of his portraits, Pyke is able to erase the lofty reputation that is often placed on philosophers who ponder life's seemingly unanswerable questions. He captures the humanity and personality of these men and women in an astounding way, enabling their presence to be experienced and appreciated.

Born in England in 1957, Steve Pyke lives and works in New York City. He works on a regular basis for The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is held in permanent collection including the National Portrait Gallery in both Washington, DC and London, Imperial War Museum in London and the New York Public Library.
