I keep seeing Douglas Engelbart remembered as just the guy who invented the mouse, and that framing is almost an insult. In one ninety minute demo in 1968 he showed windows, clicking, hypertext links, and live video editing, basically the next fifty years of computing, and then watched everyone else get rich from it. This is the story of why being decades too early is impossible to tell apart from being wrong, and how the man who pointed at the future earned essentially nothing from the billions of mice that followed.
