Is agile been made into a monster?
In this video, I explore the agile development methodology and how it has been misinterpreted in the software development community.
Let's start by explaining the four main principles of the Agile Manifesto, which include valuing individuals and interactions over processes and tools, working software over comprehensive documentation, customer collaboration over contract negotiation, and responding to change over following a plan.
Next we discuss the full 12 principles and groups them into sets to show how they have been misinterpreted. The first set of principles highlights the importance of satisfying the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software, delivering working software frequently, and working software being the primary measure of progress.
Next I discuss how these principles have been twisted into hard and fast rules, such as continuously delivering software only to production, delivering functionality to customers every two weeks, and considering anything that takes longer than two weeks a failure.
The second set of principles emphasizes reflection, effective communication, and collaboration between business people and developers, which the speaker suggests have been twisted into mandatory retrospective meetings, face-to-face conversations only, and daily scrum meetings.
Finally the video briefly touches on the last six principles, which have seemingly disappeared from the way teams should deliver software. These include building projects around motivated individuals, trusting and empowering teams, face-to-face conversation, working software as the primary measure of progress, sustainable development, and continuous attention to technical excellence and good design.
