All the best things about the new Vision OS 27 update on the Apple Vision Pro. I also tell you all the things that are still bothering me about Vision OS in general.
So after the release of the developer betas at WWDC, I told myself I was just going to wait until the public beta came out before giving the new VisionOS 27 a try.
That was before I saw the new environment, Thorsmök. It looked absolutely stunning from the videos I saw of others using it, and figured it was a good enough reason to give the developer beta a try since I fully immerse myself in environments nearly every morning while working inside the Apple Vision Pro.
The biggest standout improvement so far for me has been the new environment which has quickly become my new favorite. Thorsmork is stunning and beautiful
With VisionOS 27 came a new widget. Tapping this widget quickly launches Mac Virtual Display, even if my laptop is closed. This has been a very welcomed addition to workflow, and keeps me from having to dig into the control center every time I want to connect to my laptop.
I’ll admit that the widget has been a bit finicky and buggy, but I presume they will get this ironed out and give a bit of grace since this is a developer beta after all.
Ability to screen record inside the Apple Vision Pro in High Quality. Now, I can screen record exactly what I am seeing and share that with shaper, 4k video recordings that are so much better quality than they were before. This new feature is limited to 3 minutes.
new safari tabs are super buggy and unusable for me. not a big deal as I don’t spend that much time browsing safari in the vision pro app, more likely to use Mac virtual display and safari from my mac
Things that still bother me about VisionOS:
Notes app still doesn’t have a true dark mode. When writing/journaling and scripting early in the morning on the notes app inside the AVP, I’ll be in a dark room, immersed in the awesome new dark environment Thorsmork, and then I will have an incredibly bright blank white screen looking back at me. This usually makes me want to pull up Mac virtual display and write inside of the notes app inside of macOS so that I can write in dark mode on a black screen inside dark environment, but then I lose the extreme focus that working inside the Apple Vision Pro apps offers.
The very large keyboard continues to pop up right in your face even when you have a Bluetooth keyboard connected. It does automatically reduce itself to the little preview and predictive text bar, but then you have to move that out of the way. I understand you need a way to input text while selecting a text input place on the screen, but it would be nice if it recognized the Bluetooth keyboard as active and gave me the option to auto show/hide the large virtual keyboard while using a Bluetooth keyboard. The good news is that it attaché itself to your Bluetooth keyboard as it moves, so long as there is enough light in the room
Immersive environments- well, they kinda improved the settings of the immersive environments with the new control center layout, except that they removed the ability to select the automatic feature between light and dark mode. You now have to dig all the way into the settings under environments to select the automatic option for light and dark environments. This has been super annoying as sometimes I want light or dark, while other times I enjoy the automatic feature like early in the morning as the sun comes up and the transition from dark to light is very nice. If you make a change in the control center at anytime from dark/light light/dark, you have to go back into the main settings app menu to select the automatic feature again. This used to be accomplished right inside of the control center menu
