If your ears feel clogged or full, the first thing most people assume is earwax.

But what if there’s no wax at all?

This is one of the most confusing ear symptoms I see as an audiologist. People come in convinced their ears are blocked with wax — but when we look, the ear canal is completely clear.

So why do your ears still feel clogged?

In this video, I explain the most common reasons your ears can feel blocked even when there’s no earwax, including problems involving the eustachian tube, inflammation in the ear canal, pressure changes, and other conditions that can create that frustrating “full ear” sensation.

Understanding the real cause is important, because treating the wrong problem can actually make your symptoms worse.

I’ll also explain:

• Why your ears can feel clogged even when the ear canal is clear
• The most common medical causes of ear fullness
• When earwax is not the problem
• Signs that you should have your ears checked by a professional
• What you can do to relieve the sensation safely

If you’ve ever wondered why your ears feel clogged but there’s no wax, this video will help you understand what may actually be going on.

I’m Dr. Shaina Stapleton, audiologist and founder of Better Hearing Rehabilitation Center in Durham, North Carolina, where I help people understand hearing, ear health, and hearing technology.
