Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Excel Pivot Tables Grouping by Months, Quarters or Years.
Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this week's episode, we will be discussing pivot tables and how to work with dates in them. Specifically, we will be looking at how to group dates by months, quarters, and years to make our data more organized and easier to analyze.
To start, we will insert a pivot table and select the date field to go down the left-hand side and the revenue field. As we are working with transactional data, our initial report will show daily dates. However, it would be more useful to group these dates into larger time periods. This is where the grouping feature comes in handy.
To group our dates, we can either right-click on the date field or use the group selection option in the ribbon. This will bring up a dialogue box where we can choose to group the dates by months, quarters, or years. Once we click ok, Excel will automatically group the dates and display them in the pivot table. You will notice that there are now three separate fields in the row labels area.
To further analyze our data, we can move the years field to the column labels and compare year-over-year data. This is just one example of how grouping dates in a pivot table can help us gain valuable insights from our data.
Now, you may be wondering about grouping dates by weeks. While there is no specific option for weeks, we can still achieve this by ungrouping our dates and then grouping them again, this time selecting only days and grouping them into seven-day periods. This is also useful for creating weekly reports or for those who have 13 months in their year.
In addition to months, quarters, and years, the grouping feature allows us to create custom time periods such as five-day periods or 28-day accounting periods. This gives us even more flexibility in organizing our data.
