The date, with its unusual consistency and incomparable, almost bizarre taste, is truly a fruit. The taste may seem very foreign the first time you try it, but the more often you consume it, the more your body recognizes it. Dates are also called the bread of the desert because of their huge role in the Arab world. In recent years, this fruit has been gaining increasing attention in European countries. It's only a matter of time before they become commonplace on our menus.

The date palm is one of the few dioecious plants, meaning there are purely male and female plants. Only female palms produce fruit. Therefore, there is great interest in determining the sex of a palm tree early on. How can you tell externally whether it's a male or female palm? Funny. The males are stockier and more robustly built than the females. It takes more than five years for a palm garden to determine this at the earliest. Geneticists sequenced a region of the genome that could actually reveal the sex. They compared gene sequences from male and female palms. They found evidence that this plant has developed a system with X and Y chromosomes to transmit sex. Similar to humans. Some sequences might even be related to fruit quality and yield. So, in the future, a genetic test for date palms might be possible, allowing for better planning of cultivation.
