How to drag a formula in Excel by using a sticky reference cell in Excel. For example, if you want to drag a formula down column B but want it to continually reference a single cell in column A (A1, for instance). To tell Excel to remain fixed on one cell, simply enter a dollar sign ($) in the first reference. The dollar sign will keep the formula pointing to your first reference as you fill other cells. This is called an absolute reference.
For example:
=SUM($A$1,B1) (This is where you would begin, and as you drag the formula down, the cells would change as follows. Notice how $A$1 remains fixed while column B cells change).
=SUM($A$1,B2)
=SUM($A$1,B3)
Best uses include: When you want to quickly duplicate a formula in a column, but do not want the reference cell to move as you drag from the first cell. Instead, this method will help the formula "stick" to its reference cell.
