Osu with Autism

April is Autism Awareness Month, so I wanted to make a video celebrating that!

OK so for some context. I have Autism. I am in the high-functioning low support needs part of the spectrum formerly known as Asperger's. This means that I have little to no intellectual impairment (depending on what you would want to categorize as intellectual impairment) but my brain does certain things very differently when compared to a neurotypical person.

The difference that this video is focusing on is where I am looking while playing. Research suggests that often, people with Autism will have very strong peripheral vision. This often results in Autistic people not looking directly at the person or thing they are paying attention to. (I remember seeing an article about how Autistic people look at the center of information in front of them rather than at the specific pieces of important information, but I can't find it again for some reason, but it still applies for my personal experience.) Anyway, the main thing I wanted to draw attention to is that my eyes barely move when doing large jump patterns. I was partially inspired to make a video like this by Tokaku because of this video    • osu! eye tracking: Noob (beginner) vs...  . I originally thought that she was not Autistic and that this video could be used as an interesting comparison between an Autistic and not Autistic person, but I have found out that she has been diagnosed with Autism, so I suppose it would still be an interesting comparison for how gaze compares between 2 Autistic people? Just go watch the video it's interesting no matter what.

For my personal experience, after watching the Tokaku video, I started noticing that I would almost never look at each individual object, but instead kinda look in the middle of the pattern, using my peripheral vision to see what I needed to see. The cool thing was that this was even before I got an Autism diagnosis. And even far after I got my Autism diagnosis did I see the information talking about how people with Autism have stronger peripheral vision and tend to look in the center of information. After I saw that, it was like a light turned on. IDK I just thought that making that discovery was really cool because it finally explained something that I always thought was just something weird that I do rather than something that had an actual explanation.

Anyway, the reason I didn't just say all this in the intro is because I get super awkward/nervous doing voice overs and literally overthink it so much that I spend up to 10 minutes thinking about just the inflection, not even the words, used for just 1 sentence. Also it's just so much information that having this as an intro would take way too long in my opinion.

ANYWAY this video is just a small compilation very similar to my other osu videos where I just put in a bunch of clips where I think I did something cool or something funny happened, just highlights, but I was using an eye tracker at the time. I hope you enjoy this, and I hope that you find the eye tracker stuff as interesting as I did :D

also quick thing, the rainbow infinity symbol in the thumbnail is the symbol for Autism for those who were unaware, and the cursor movement next to it happens in the video, so keep an eye out for when that happens I guess.
