In the 23rd issue of "Cossack Victory" we introduce you to the regimental and hundred-level structure of the Cossack state - the Hetmanate. In particular, how the administrative and territorial administration of the Ukrainian lands took place in those days.
The formation of registered Cossack regiments began at the beginning of the 17th century. In 1626, when Hetman Mykhailo Doroshenko compiled the Cossack register, the existence of six military-territorial units with centers in Chyhyryn, Bila Tserkva, Pereyaslav, Korsun, Kaniv and Cherkasy was recorded. A little later, the Poltava, Myrhorod, Lubensk and Yabluniv regiments were formed. The first state reforms, changes in the territorial and administrative structure, the establishment of the bodies of the seniority government, the organization of the financial and tax system, which together created a new model of the national state, were carried out by Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky during the difficult time of the war. Under him, the territory of Ukraine was already divided into 16 military-administrative districts - regiments. Over time, the administrative and military structure underwent certain changes - some regiments existed for a very short time, others - either disappeared or reappeared. At the head of the Zaporozhian Army, as all of Ukraine was then called, was the Hetman, with an advisory body under him - the Council of the General Seniority. As necessary, the Hetman convened the Cossack Council to discuss the most important issues of the life of the army. Another important body of state self-government was the Regimental Council, which resolved all current issues of regimental life.
