I generally fade images - particularly aerial photos - for two reasons:

1. To make it easier to see the AutoCAD linework while drawing and designing.

2. To make the AutoCAD linework 'pop' out from the drawing when plotted.

The aerial photo image is still very visible and the different elements and features can be clearly identified but the AutoCAD linework is the main element. The ability to be able to quickly manipulate the amount of 'fade' applied to the aerial photo can also be very useful while documenting.
