WP Smush.it is a neat little plugin that will optimize images that you upload to your Wordpress media libary. So if you're creating a new post and decide to upload and insert a new image, Smush.it will optimize the image after the upload process has finished.
You also have the option to perform bulk image optimization, this is great if you already have lot of images in your media library.
