Silent Hill 2 takes place in a fictional universe that partially resembles the real world, in which everyday reality intersects with another, alternative world, both of which are filled with monsters. The main character is James Sunderland, who receives a letter from his wife Mary, who died some time before the main events of the game. In the letter, she asks him to come to the resort town of Silent Hill. Upon reaching his destination, James encounters a mysterious woman named Maria, an almost exact copy of his wife. Eventually, he realizes that part of his memories was self-deception.
