Sketchup Basics | Session 8 | Materials in Vray | How To Create Realistic Materials
Hello everyone, today I will start to guide you about Materials in Vray Sketchup..
First I will guide you through the basic properties of a material and understand their functions better.
Then I will guide you to create each material and attach each layer of properties to it!
Vray provides many types of materials to meet all the needs when creating materials. Understanding the meaning of the parameters of the material setting table is quite important. Because if you want to do it and make it beautiful, you have to understand it.
In which VRayMtl is used the most, it is the most basic material that VRay provides. Most of the components you want to create can be made from a VRayMtl.
Some basic parameters:
Diffuse
You can set a color or a map image in diffuse. This is the color of the surface of an object, the reflection and refraction of the color can affect the visual appearance of this color. This is important because you must understand that no object in the real world is pure white RGB (25,255,255) or black RGB (0,0,0). When creating a white or black material, set the values ​​of white RGB (245,245,245) / black RGB (2,2,2). If you make an object pure black or white, you will notice that there will be no color contrast of the object.
Reflection
This is the index that reflects the reflection of light in the object. White RGB (255,255,255) is perfectly reflective (like a mirror) and black RGB (0,0,0) is not reflective. By using colors instead of black or white, you will get color reflections. You will typically use a color value to determine the strength of the reflection and there is no right or wrong value so you will have to use your best judgment. However, the following figure can be used as a guide.
Reflection glossiness
A value of 1.0 means a clear specular reflection, lower values ​​mean a dimmer reflection. The dimmer the reflection the longer it takes to calculate.
Refraction
This is the index used to determine the strength of the refraction. RGB white (255,255,255) is perfectly refractive and RGB black (0,0,0) is not refractive. By using color instead of black and white you will get a colored refraction. You will typically use a black or white value to determine the strength of the refraction and there is no right or wrong value so you will have to use your best judgment.
Bump Maps
Bump maps are one of the oldest types of maps still in use today. The first thing to know about bump maps is that the textures and details they create are just an illusion and not real. Bump maps create the illusion of surface depth by using a simple trick of lighting. The result of a bump map does not create any additional physical changes to the model.

Normal Maps
Normal maps can be considered an upgraded and improved version of bump maps. Similar to bump maps, the first thing you need to know about normal maps is that the details they create are just an illusion and not real. And there are no physical changes to the geometry in the scene. Finally, normal maps also create the illusion of surface depth for models, but in a different way than bump maps.

Displacement Maps

When it comes to creating real texture details on the surface, displacement maps deserve the throne. These types of maps will create physical changes to the surface. For a displacement map to work, the mesh needs to be set up as subdivided or tessellated, which is when the actual geometry is created.

The great thing about displacement maps is that they can be created from a high-resolution image, or they can be easily painted by hand. Like a bump map, a displacement map also includes grayscale values.
