A film adaptation of Yuri Tynyanov's novel of the same name about the last year of Alexander Sergeevich Griboyedov's life.
1829. Russia has won the war with Persia. Griboyedov, triumphant, brings the Treaty of Turkmenchay to St. Petersburg. He is received favorably by the Tsar. All of St. Petersburg applauds him, but despite the appearance of success and victory, Griboyedov is in turmoil: after the weakness he showed during the Decembrist trial, inspiration has deserted him, and he is unable to write.
As a reward, Griboyedov is awarded the Order of Anna, Second Class, with diamonds, and four thousand chervonets. A stranger to everyone, he maintains friendship only with "the funniest of all literary scum," Faddey Bulgarin, which, however, does not prevent him from having an affair with Faddey's wife, Lenochka. The public expects new brilliant literary triumphs from the author of "Woe from Wit."
Instead, Griboyedov developed a plan to transform Transcaucasia not by force of arms, but by economic means, proposing the creation of a unified society of capitalist producers. He sought the support of Foreign Minister Nesselrode and Department Director Rodofinikin. This plan now became the main goal of his life...
