Faced with the great desires and the lacks in our lives, two attitudes are common: immediately satisfying every desire and distracting ourselves from the lack, as consumer society encourages us to do, or suppressing them and functioning solely according to duty, believing this to be the life of a good Christian. But the Christian faith invites us to a third way, the only one capable of offering us lasting joy and peace. Embracing our deepest desires, discovering in our lacks a place of life and fruitfulness—this is the condition for an intimate encounter with God and a path to true freedom.
