The reason I didn’t get into college for singing 🌶️

When I was 18 I auditioned for a music college in Switzerland (I grew up there) to study contemporary voice.

I was super excited and overly confident in my abilities as a singer (I really thought that I’d get in… spoiler alert - I didn’t).

So I took the train to Zurich (took me like 2 hours to get there haha!) and auditioned for the professors there.

They had us do lots of different things - write and perform a song in a group, written theory tests, solo performance, ear training, etc.

I made it all the way to the last round - the solo performance.

I sang the song Three Little Birds (they gave us a list of songs to choose from prior to the audition). A life band accompanied me and I thought I did an awesome job.

At the end of the audition they gave me this feedback:

“We’ve observed you through this entire process and thought you were a good singer, but you never showed us the softer part of your voice. Today, you finally showed us that side of your voice in the beginning of the song. But unfortunately you went from 0 to 100 too quickly again. The soft is just as important as the powerful. You have a lot of potential… come back in two years and we’ll accept you.”

I was SHOCKED! 😮

They later went on to tell me that they never take anyone under the age of 20 (I was 18 at that time) and they only take 1 singer per year (yes, you heard that right… only 1 singer per year…).

Dynamics…. that’s what cost me my college acceptance.

(all good though, cause I auditioned for Berklee in Boston later and got in haha!).
