!!!Chlorophyll Chromatography!!! (Why Do The Leaves Change Color - Chromotagraphy Paper Experiment) SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
Crazy Chris is checking out the fall leaves and shows you how to see color in a green leaf with a chlorophyll cinematography test you can do right at home!
Objective: To understand leaf colors pigmintation and why the leaves change color in the fall.
Materials Needed:
~ Maple Tree Leaves
~ Coffee Filter
~ Scissors
~ Glass Jar
~ Rubbing Alcohol
Step 1) Start by getting yourself some maple leafs oak leafs or any other leafs.
Step 2) Cut a coffee filter into a 2.5cm wide strip and using a coin scrape the leaf in a straight line alone the coffee filter.
Step 3) Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol into a container and then place your coffee filter strip so that it just dips into the rubbing alcohol. Let this Sit for for 2-4 hours.
HOW DOES IT WORK:
The reason tree leaves change color in the fall is because trees sence the decreased amount of light, colder tempretures and the lack of rain water. When these things are senced the tree releases chemicals that shut off water an food delivery to the leaves and they begin to shut down. As leaves shut down they stop making cholorphyl and the and green coloring starts to fade away and the leafs true color can then be seen. Which is why you get two colors on your coffee filter, the alcohol seperates the chemicals in the chloraphyl. Eventurally the leaf turns brown due to cell wall death and fall off the tree. The color in the leaf depend on chemicals either disolved or as floating granuals in the leaf cells cytoplasum. Leaves that are yellow have the chemical xanthaphyl, orange leaves have the chemical charetene, red leaves the the chemical anthocyanin and some golden brown leaves have the chemical tanans in them. Xanthaphyll and caretenes stay in the leaf through out the leafs life but anthysayinins which is caused by sugar build up in the leaf and tanans develpe towards the end of the leafs life. Trees evovled color changing leaves as well as shedding leaves for two major reasons, first is to stop inscects from snacking on the leaves while the tree reabsorbs the nutrients by scaring the insects off with colors as well as to stop them from snacking on the leaves through the winter. Colors also help trees reabsorb nutrients more effeciently and also drop thier leaves cause its just to much work to care for leaves over the long cold dry winter months.
